  多协议标签交换( mpls )技术就是为了综合利用网络核心的交换技术和网络边缘的ip路由技术各自的优点而产生的。在mpls技术方案提出之前已有的各种集成模型解决方案所采取的基本方法都是从ip路由器获取控制信息，将其与atm交换机的转发性能和标签交换方式相结合，从而构建成一个高速而经济的多层交换路由器。但是，各种方案彼此不能互通，而且仅适用于以atm作为第2层的传输链路，不能工作在其他多种媒体(如帧中继、点对点协议、以太网)中，这与internet基于分组的发展方向相矛盾。
