Scrooge is a common English term for a miserly person, by reference to the fictional character Ebenezer Scrooge, the selfish and miserly protagonist of Charles Dickens' 1843 novel A Christmas Carol. The name is thought to have been inspired by Dickens' misreading of a tombstone erected to a man with the surname Scroggie.
