蜂胶是蜂巢边的“蜡胶”，是蜜蜂刻意飞越某些树林，利用后腿沾上树木分泌的树脂，到了蜂巢边时将树脂拍下再用自己吐出的酶和蜂蜡混合成为蜂胶，它能抗菌抗病毒，保护幼虫、幼蜂及蜂后等整个蜂巢在无菌的状态下生存，因此主要功能是保护蜂巢，在未萃取前看起来像是有黏性的蜡质。
