  计算机在医院的应用，在国外是从50年代后期逐渐发展的，四十多年来，医院计算机应用得到空前发展，已基本形成一个较完善的体系。医院信息系统即利用电子计算机和通讯设备，为医院所属各部门提供病人诊疗信息和行政管理信息的收集、存储、处理、提取和数据交换的能力，并满足所有授权用户的功能需求。内容上，涉及到医学决策支持、医学信息系统、医学研究支持系统、医学教育方面、护理应用、医学情报检索、医学图像及信号处理、医学仪器智能化及医院管理信息系统等诸方面。
