The genus " Bolbitius " is defined as small thin " Mycena "-like mushrooms, with a hymenoderm pileipellis, a glutinous deposit.
It is easy to confuse " Conocybe " species for " Galerina " species unless the microscopic nature of the cap cuticle is examined . " Conocybe " species have cap cuticles resembling cobblestones . " Conocybe " species can also be mistaken for species of " Bolbitius ".
However, a 2013 study by T髏h " et al . " found " Pholiotina " as it is currently defined to be polyphyletic, with one clade forming the sister group to " Descolea ", another forming the sister group to " Bolbitius " and another forming the sister group to " Galerella nigeriensis ".
